Wild Mushroom Foraging 101: Identifying Gills, Caps & Toxic Lookalikes

Foraging for wild mushrooms is an exhilarating outdoor activity that connects us deeply to forest ecosystems. However, safety must always remain the number one priority.

Never consume any wild mushroom unless you are 100% certain of its identity. Many edible choice mushrooms (like Chanterelles) have dangerous toxic lookalikes (like Jack-o-Lantern mushrooms).

When examining a specimen, pay close attention to the stem base (checking for a volva or bulbous sack), whether gills are free or attached to the stem, and the texture of the cap veil.
